A truly outstanding example of the 1739 "Works of Lactantius" published in Lipsiae,(Leipzig, Germany) by Ludolph Bünemann in what is most probably its rare original Velum binding. Although these texts survive in numerous manuscripts, most are in institutional collections, and they appear only rarely on the market. Lucius Caecilius Firmianus Lactantius was an early Christian author (c. 240 – c. 320) who became an advisor to the first Christian Roman emperor, Constantine I, guiding his religious policy as it developed. He was known for his writings on Christian apologetics and theology. This "Opera Onmia" of Lactanius includes several beautiful fold-out manuscript facsimiles along with annotations and commentaries by various scholars of the time. Condition: 8vo. 1528 pages plus the index - Engraved frontispiece with title page printed in red and black and including a dedication and preface. In remarkable original condition with light edgewear, corners bumped, soiling and toning to the velum with several small puncture marks along the lower spine. Foxing and toning to the endpapers, toning to interior pages. An 1809 date and numerous handwritten notations on the front pastedown along with a signature in ink on the front flyleaf. Overall, this scarce edition is in very good or better condition for its age and would make an excellent addition to any collection.
