Democracy in America - Paris - 1836 - Fourth edition (Two Volumes) "De la Démocratie en Amerique by Alexis De Tocqueville, Lawyer to the Royal Court of Paris, one of the authors of the book entitled 'Of the Penitentiary System in the United States.' Adorned with a map of America. Quatrième édition published in France by Charles Gosselin."  8vo. 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" Volume one- 387 pages. Complete with half-titles, Notes, Constitution of the United States and the State of New York, Table of contents and a hand- colored folding map of the United States dated 1834. Volume 2 - 447 pages - Complete with half-title, notes, table of contents and errata sheet. Early half-calf leather binding over mottled paper boards with marbled endpapers. In good or better condition with edgewear, corner tips worn away, a bit of restoration done to reinforce the leather spine, joints are cracked but holding and typical heavy foxing to a number of pages and the map due to the low-quality paper used in France at this time. The early Fourth edition/printing of one of the most important political texts dealing with the United States printed in the nineteenth century. First published in 1835. Tocqueville revised each edition of the first part up to the eighth edition himself, so that each had their own unique aspects. Seven editions were published by 1839, and it was not until 1840 that Tocqueville completed his analysis with volumes III and IV. (Sabin 96060. Cf. Howes T 278)
