A very good or better copy of the Simon & Schuster, New York 1960 stated first printing of E.L. Doctorow's first book with the same dates to the title and copyright page, and the $3.50 price at the lower front jacket flap. Condition: 8vo. 181 pages publishers 3/4 orange paper over quarter cream cloth, with titles stamped in black on the spine and the front panel, with brownish topstain. Toning to the white cloth and browning to the spine. Toning to the endpapers and browning as usual to interior pages. A previous owners name in ink at the upper front free endpaper and notation in pen at the upper rear free endpaper. The previous owner has also bracketed a few paragraphs and circled some words on the first four pages along with several other interior pages. (see photos) The unclipped dust jacket is also in very good or better condition with toning to the front, browning and light wear to the spine and a tiny, closed tear to the lower back cover. Overall, a very nice copy of the somewhat scarce first novel from Edgar Lawrence Doctorow, later adapted to film in 1967 starring Henry Fonda.
