A very good copy of the Edgar Rice Burroughs (1933) novel Apache Devil, US first edition, first printing, published in Tarzana, Ca. by Burroughs Inc.
An important association copy, inscribed by the author to his brother Henry, the father of Studley Burroughs who provided the dust jacket art and the internal illustrations. Inscribed less than two months after the publication (February 15, 1933): “To Henry with love and best wishes Ed / Malibu April 9, 1933”. Original dustjacket front cover glued to pastedown by the author, as is often found in copies presented to Henry. The Ex-libris bookplate of Henry’s wife Ella Oldham Burroughs affixed to the front pastedown.
Condition: 8vo. 310 pages - Very good book in near fine to fine original supplied dust jacket. The book tight with the slightest lean, covers lightly spotted and rubbed at the edges, spine toned and softening and fraying at spine tips. Top stain lightly faded but retaining the red color, pages faintly toned, otherwise clean and unmarked. The supplied dustjacket is in the unlaminated state and shows only a shadow of wear to note.
‘Apache Devil’, was the sequel to 1927's ‘The War Chief’ (1927) It would be Burroughs' 39th book and the fourth published by his own company. It is uncommon in the original $2.00 dust jacket and quite rare signed or inscribed. A very collectible copy with a great Burroughs family association!
