A beautiful and quite rare First Edition copy of the 1881 semi-autobiographical novel "House of the Dead - Buried Alive, or Ten Years of Penal Servitude in Siberia." This first edition and printing was published by Henry Holt & Co. - New York soon after his death in February of 1881. This would be Dostoevsky's first publication here in the United States translated from the Russian text by Marie Von Thilo. Condition: 8vo. 361 pages plus two pages of ads at the rear - Beautifully rebound in full green Pentland Goat leather with gilt stamped titles to the spine, new decorative endpapers and with the publisher's original olive-green cloth pictorially cover bound in at the front. There is some toning to the outer page edges along with a bit of foxing, a few stains, and several finger smudges. Overall, a very desirable copy, nicely restored and ready to add to your collection.
