A very good copy of the rare and important 1774 first American edition of John Hawkesworth's "A New Voyage Round the World, In the Years 1768, 1769, 1770, And 1771; Undertaken by Order of his present Majesty, performed by Captain James Cooke, In the Ship Endeavour, Drawn up from his own Journal, and form the Papers of Joseph Banks. Volume 2 of 2 published by James Rivington in New York. 8vo. 8" x 5" nicely rebound in full calf leather with titles and date stamped in gilt to the spine and with hand decorated colored endpapers. Some paper loss to the upper corner of the 1st blank preliminary page with some creasing and heavy toning and foxing throughout. Early provenance in ink includes the "Rutter" family and that of "Allen Gawthrop" with the dates of October 14, 1830, and November of 1885. Chipping along the outer edge of the title page, creasing to the lower corners, and pages 241-242 appear to be a facsimile that have been bound into the book. Overall, a presentable copy of this pirated and 1774 First U.S. edition, quite scarce in any condition.
