DescriptionMacrobius Opera - Accendunt integrae I Pontani, J. Meursii, J. Meursii, J. Gronovii notae & animadversions. Ed. novissima cum indice rerum & vocum Iocupletissimo. A very presentable copy of the 1694 first edition of Macrobius to be printed in England, published by Dring & Harper, and further distinguished by the fact that the printers were Mary Clark and Benjamin Motte. This copy is fully indexed with notes by Pontanus, Meursius and Gronovius. It includes the rare Imprimatur leaf found in only a few copies, the additional engraved title page, the letterpress title printed in red and black ink and the celebrated world map on page 106. Condition: Octavio 491 pages plus the index - bound in early calf leather with a contemporary leather spine, black leather gilt stamped spine label, the contemporary Armorial bookplate of renowned author, historian and librarian of the Royal Astronomical Society, R.E.W. Maddison and the interesting early ownership signature of 'Hon: Payne" in ink on the Title page. The leather boards are rubbed and worn with heavy wear to the corners. Foxing and toning to the endpapers and interior pages and a dampstain visible along the outer edge of a number of pages towards the end of the book, including the rear pastedown. Overall, an important work in very good antiquarian condition.
