A very good copy of the 1882 First American Edition of Mark Twain's third novel The Prince & the Pauper in the scarce "Sheep" binding. First Edition and second state preceded by the English and Canadian editions. BAL 3402. This copy has the Franklin Press imprint on the copyright page, but the original spelling errors have been corrected. Published by subscription by James R. Osgood of Boston, with 192 illustrations in black and white by Frank Thayer Merrill, John Harley and Ludvig Sandöe Ipsen. Condition: 8vo. 411 pages - 21.5x16 cm (8½x6¼"), publisher's sheep, later rebacking with one of the original leather spine labels laid down. Moderate rubbing to binding, hinges reinforced, some soiling and toning to leaves, armorial bookplate of renowned physician C. Frederic Fluhmann on the front pastedown with his & ownership signature on the blank preliminary page with some erasure marks visible on the 2nd blank prelim; Overall, a very good copy in the increasingly hard to find original sheep binding.
