Two single page holographic letters signed. Dated November 10, 1786 & January 12th, 1787.Letter #1. "William Henry" Milan, Nov 10th 1786. The letter reads in part; "Sir , I propose passing a month or six weeks at Naples. I hope to be at Rome about the 26th where I shall stay until the 27th of December. I shall be very glad to see you again. Do not be afraid of my visit, for I shall be very little trouble to you and you know me to be tolerably docile." It is signed "Yours William Henry". 1 page, 8 3/4"x 14" folded in half with 3 vertical and 1 horizontal folds. In good condition for the age with some toning and a damp stain along the upper and lower right corners and the outer edge (see photos). An interesting watermark and four stamp marks visible on the stationery.Letter #2. "William Henry" Naples Jan 12th 1787. The letter reads in part; "Sir , I am much obliged to you for your attention in wishing to come to Naples, I should be exceedingly sorry to take you from your first duty, and a thing that is so pleasant to you as attending His Sicilian Majesty". He also gives thanks for the gift of "Wild Bear" and mentions seldom venturing outside recently because of Asthma attacks. It is signed "Yours William Henry". (The Sicilian Majesty mentioned in the letter had to have been King Ferdinand IV who ruled Naples and Sicily from 1759 - 1825). The letter is Also signed on the back as 'Duke of Gloucester, Naples January 12th 1787'. 1 page, 8 3/4"x 14" folded in half with 2 vertical and 3 horizontal folds. In good condition for the age with some toning a paper clip imprint and a large damp stain around the center fold and some chipping along the left edge.
William Henry (Born November 14, 1743 - Died August 25, 1805) Earl of Connaught, 1st Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh, Knight of the Garter and 13th Chancellor of Trinity College, Dublin. The younger brother of King George III. His parents were Frederick, Prince of Wales, eldest son of George II and Caroline of Ansbach, and Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, then Princess of Wales.
