Description: A very good copy of the Harper and Brothers January 1919 1st Edition with the date code "A-T" on the copyright page in a scarce and very good+ unclipped dust jacket. One of Grey's early books, and somewhat of a departure from his western adventures. The Desert of Wheat is a patriotic novel set during World War One, it is the story of Washington State wheat farmer  Kurt Dorn, who fights to protect his crops against saboteurs and the radical unionist members of the International Workers of the World (I.W.W.) The book remains one of his least known works, and jacketed copies of the first edition today are very collectible. 8vo. 377pp. four W.H.D. Koerner illustrations including the frontispiece. Publishers cloth with gilt print and decoration to the cover and spine.  Condition: Just light wear to the edges and corners, and softening to the spine ends with a few finger smudges to the cloth. A bookseller notation in pencil to the upper front endpaper shows the price of $1.50 net and the date of 1/19. A previous owner name to the upper free endpaper with a 1919 date, and the same name to upper rear endpaper with a small Brentano's Washington D.C. Book store label affixed to the lower rear endpaper. The books comes with (TWO) full color, full pictorial wrap around dust-wrappers, (the original Harper and Brothers and the nearly identical Grosset and Dunlap) both in very good condition. The Harper jacket shows some chipping at the folds and spine ends, a bit of creasing to the edges, a small scrape to the rear cover and a couple of small closed tears with some sunning to the spine and spine print has faded. Several small tape repairs to the verso of the jacket. Overall a very nice and very collectible 1919 first edition with jacket.
