An outstanding and near fine copy of James Joyce Ulysses, a cornerstone of modernist literature, renowned for its experimental prose, stream-of-consciousness technique, and intricate allusions to classical works like Homer's Odyssey. This copy is in fact the pirated 1929 first American edition, distinguishable by its heavier paper stock and numerous typographical errors including the misspelling of "Jonathan Cape" on the "By the Same Writer" page. It has become an intriguing piece of literary history. It is based on the legitimate 9th printing by Shakespeare and Company from May 1927. It was printed by Adolph and Rudolph Loewinger in New York for Samuel and Max Roth. Approximately 2,000 to 3,000 copies were produced, but many were seized by "The Society for the Suppression of Vice" on October 5, 1929. Interestingly, one of these pirated copies was sent by Joyce to Bennett A. Cerf of Random House, and it played a role in setting up the first authorized American edition of Ulysses. Condition: 8vo.~ 735 pages ~ Beautifully bound in full blue calf leather with gilt stamped titles to the spine, topstain and Italian marbled endpapers. The interior itself is clean and unmarked with just the typical toning to the paper. These few remaining Pirated Copies have become a sought-after collector's item, embodying the legacy of Joyce's groundbreaking work and its unique publication history.
