The History of Pendennis: His Fortunes and Misfortunes, His Friends and his Greatest Enemy - Bradbury & Evans, London - November,1848-December,1850. 24 parts in 23. Illustrated by Thackeray with 48 etched plates, including added titles: wood engravings in the text. An outstanding First Edition in the original parts of Thackeray's rather convoluted tale of love, lust and greed amongst the English gentry. "Pendennis Advertiser[s]" present as called for and some of the other ads as itemized by Van Duzer, including Dickens ads and slips in parts 15-18. The back wrapper ad on part 13 incorporates a woodcut view of San Francisco from the southwest. This parts issue contains passages and illustrations in chapters 16 & 18 which were excised from all early editions in book form. Between the appearance of part 11 and part 12 there is a 3-month gap due to Thackeray's illness. Custom straight-grain Morocco pull-off case and cloth-covered chemise. Some repair to backstrips, large chips to upper wrappers of parts 1 & 22, mild soiling; occasional hints of foxing to plates; Overall, an outstanding set of this Thackeray classic in original parts in very good condition.
