Descripton: A good+  copy of the Harper & Brothers, NY, 1918. First printing with the correct code 'A-S' on the copyright page and published January 1918 on the Copyright page. SIGNED and inscribed by Zane Grey in the month and year of publication on the front free endpaper and housed in the extremely rare 1st state dust jacket in good condition with the $1.50 net price on the jacket spine. 8vo.  5" x 7 3/4", 409 pages. Bound in brown cloth with gold lettering and a decoration on the front board. B&W frontis plate. A Good copy. Signed by the author at Long Key, Florida January 16, 1918. "To Claire from her far removed cousin Zane Grey". Condition: The book shows some wear to the edges and corners, creasing along the spine, some discoloration to the cloth on the front, rear and spine. Some toning to the endpapers and a split to the paper along the gutter of the front endpaper. The extremely rare 102 year old dust jacket shows some rubbing and chipping to the spine ends and  folds and some loss to the lower back cover. Some old tape repairs showing to the verso of the jacket. Claire is Claire Wilhelm, cousin of Zane's wife Lina Roth, and sister of Lillian Wilhelm who illustrated several of Zane's fishing books. Claire, her sister Lillian and Mildred Smith accompanied Grey to Long Key in 1918. Young women who traveled with Zane Grey were often lumped under the term "secretaries." Grey had a romantic involvement with Claire prior to her marriage to Philips Carlin. Overall a Good+ copy of the book and rare dust jacket with the early signature by Zane Grey.  (This item includes Free Expedited Shipping within the U.S.)
